On this day 21 years ago, I was to memorise 2 sets of 19 maps of AVN (GFS) and targetted Coffs Harbour. A storm developed on the Dorrigo Plateau mountain embedded in the base. Within 2 hours at Corindi Beach to
experience my first beaver tail. Experience large to giant hail north of there along the highway. Was there a tornado or two in this storm - we will never know but the beaver tail was testament to the balance between inflow and supercell air dynamics. Certainly a big classic supercell.I travelled down the coast to experience supercells into the night. $200 phone bill that month haha who cares can’t replace memories like this!
Ok 5th November 2000 - Incredible day for me and one of my largest ever phone bill with the old brick and Telstra unaffordable plans! But anyways I loved the chase and this image situation. I know it has been
repeated many a time but who cares when shit has not hit the fan this season yet!
Ah yes an all time classic, I think I have a pic of one of the updraft pulses really strengthening the anvil in its early stages!
I got home midnight had 2 interviews on the way down and watched lightning off the coast all the way!
Oh wow, that’s one of the best photos I’ve seen from Aust. That’s gnarly! Where was it from, Sydney?
North of Coffs Harbour
Corindi Beach
#jealous
That inlow is epic
Don’t be jealous – it has not happened for 16 years haha

Epic man
Jaw dropping structure
WOW Jimmy!
It looks like a giant shower brush
Nice tree
JimShel Kim sister said it looks like a tooth brush
it was one of my favorite storm related shots during my late teenager years, when I really entered the world of storm chasing :)
Very impressive Ákos Storman Molnár!
Still my favorite beaver tail photo.
Really Simon wow thanks!
Snap!
Look at the beavers tail on that 😍
May as well be light years away compared to this year !
May I share this
You know it is a bad season mate when all your posts are reminiscing of past chases 😎.
Was this around the Kyogle/Casino area?
Leonie Louise Sunshine Corindi Beach about 30 to 40km north of Coffs Harbour. Storm was active for at least 4 hours, produced giant hail, and some suspicious lowerings that showed strong rotation.
Incidentally, the beaver tail did not fit in view. I have get video of this here.
A beaver tail slang term is quasi permanent boundary between the inflow and outflow that seems to strike a balance and often occurs before tornadoes or at least strongly rotating supercell
It’s a balance and the beaver tail is consistent within the storm environment.
Lenticularis although not the same dynamically behaves similar ie the cloud flows along although as a system remains stationary with respect to the supercell environment
Looks like an ‘ice machine’!
