On the 20th February 2005, Geoff Thurtell and I made our way to Mudgee for a storm chase. A storm developed and rapidly intensified into a supercell heading east towards the western Hunter. After observing the

supercell near Ulan, we had to temporarily enter the clear air from Merriwa through to Deman area again nearing the supercell. A new cumulus cluster grew rapidly as moisture probably from an outflow boundary addicted against the NW winds and heating. A new supercell developed and suddenly it became a local chase near Singleton. We were able to manoeuvre the core with 2 to 4cm hail giving way to cricket ball sized hailstones pudding the vehicle. The lull confused us (BWER overhang) but that was short lived as gorilla hail punished the vehicle a kilometre further on. Full report link written by me and supported by Michael Bath in our storm news series

Video link of the core punch here! Well worth the watch.
